Rare Tomatoes

Tomatoes offer an astonishing variety of colours, shapes, sizes and flavours. In our selection of rare tomatoes you will find varieties that differ clearly from the classic red standard range – from striped and dark fruit to unusual shapes and rare colour variants.

We raise the plants ourselves as young plants in Illmitz. We deliberately choose varieties that are interesting for tomato lovers and hobby gardeners who want to try unusual tomatoes alongside well-known classics.

Rare tomato varieties with special colours

Tomatoes can be much more than red. Some varieties ripen yellow, green, creamy white or almost black, others develop purple anthocyanin colouring or multicoloured stripes and patterns.

Particularly striking varieties in our range include Dark Galaxy, Green Zebra, Indigo Blue Beauty, Brad's Atomic Grape, Black Opal and Purple Sunrise. Ananas Noire, too, shows impressively how varied tomatoes can be in colour and appearance.

Unusual shapes from cherry to beefsteak

A tomato rarity doesn't have to be large or exotic in shape. In this collection you will find small cocktail and cherry tomatoes as well as medium-sized salad tomatoes and large-fruited beefsteak tomatoes.

Varieties such as Artisan Blush Tiger or Grüne Birne have elongated or pear-shaped fruit, while other tomatoes stand out for strong ribbing, unusual shoulders or special fruit markings.

This lets you choose rarities not only by colour but also by fruit size, growth habit and intended use.

Modern breeds and special classics

Not every rare or unusual tomato is automatically an heirloom variety. Alongside historic varieties there are many modern breeds developed specifically for their colour, shape or special properties.

Modern anthocyanin tomatoes and unusually coloured cocktail tomatoes in particular add completely new looks to traditional variety diversity.

Rare tomatoes for garden and greenhouse

The plants in this collection sometimes differ greatly in growth. Some varieties grow vigorously as cordon (tall) tomatoes, others stay more compact or are particularly suited to growing in pots.

On the product pages you will therefore find more detail on growth, fruit size, flavour, position and use. This lets you choose unusual tomato varieties that are not only visually interesting but also suit your growing conditions.

Ordering rare tomatoes as plants

Pre-orders for our tomato plants open in early January. Plants ship in spring, once the young plants are strong enough and temperatures allow safe transport.

Our individual variety pages stay online outside the selling season. This way you can explore our range of rare tomatoes at your leisure and choose your favourites for the coming growing season.
