Black Opal is a dark cherry tomato from England, further developed from the well-known Black Cherry. The round fruit combines striking colour with a sweet-spicy flavour. We raise our open-pollinated young plants ourselves in Illmitz.
Black Opal and Black Cherry – the difference
Black Opal was selected from Black Cherry. The goals were improved growth, firmer flesh and a well-balanced flavour. The variety remains a vigorous, indeterminate cherry tomato with dark fruit.
How does Black Opal taste?
Fully ripe fruit tastes sweet, spicy and lightly tart. The firm, juicy texture suits snacking and salads. Roasting or briefly braising further concentrates the bold aroma.
Fruit and harvest
The round tomatoes reach around 2.5–3 cm and ripen dark red to violet or chocolate brown. The plant forms branching trusses and, with good care, fruits over a long period. Regular harvesting keeps the dense trusses manageable.
Growing Black Opal
As an indeterminate cordon tomato, Black Opal needs a sturdy support. We recommend one- or two-shoot training and regular pruning. A sunny, warm and, where possible, sheltered spot supports ripening and aroma.
Black Opal in a pot
A container should hold at least around 20 litres. Even watering close to the soil, good drainage and regular feeding during fruiting are important. In strong sun, the substrate shouldn't dry out completely.
