Black Cherry is a dark cherry tomato with a sweet, bold aroma. The indeterminate plant carries round, mahogany to violet-brown fruit over many weeks. We raise our open-pollinated young plants ourselves in Illmitz. You'll find it among our cherry and cocktail tomatoes and black tomatoes.
What makes Black Cherry special?
Bred by Vince Sapp in Florida, the variety combines the handy size of a cherry tomato with a comparatively deep tomato aroma. The fruit usually weighs around 20–25 grams and ripens in striking dark tones. At around 2.5–3.5 cm, it's round and handy.
How does Black Cherry taste?
Fully ripe, Black Cherry is sweet, juicy and well-balanced. It tastes considerably more aromatic than many mildly bred standard cherry tomatoes. For the best aroma, don't harvest the fruit as soon as it first darkens – let it ripen on the truss until it yields slightly to gentle pressure. How to spot the right harvest time with dark tomatoes is shown in our guide to black tomatoes.
Using it as a snacking and salad tomato
Black Cherry tastes great straight from the plant, in salads and for a light lunch. The handy snacking tomato is also practical in the lunchbox. Halved, it suits bruschetta or focaccia. Briefly roasted or braised, its bold aroma becomes even more concentrated.
Growing Black Cherry
The cordon tomato grows indeterminate and can reach 180–250 cm. It's trained on a sturdy stake or string, with one or two shoots. Regular pruning of side shoots keeps the plant manageable and improves airflow. How and when to remove side shoots is explained in our guide to pinching out tomatoes. The variety ripens early to medium-early, around 65–75 days after planting out.
Pot growing and care
For a container, we recommend at least around 20 litres of volume. With two-shoot growing, the container can be larger. A sunny, warm spot, even watering close to the soil and regular feeding support the long harvest period. Ripe cherry tomatoes can split with strong swings in moisture. Ripe fruit should be picked continuously.
