Cherokee Chocolate Stripes – special features of the variety
Cherokee Chocolate Stripes combines the size of a beefsteak tomato with a dark, striped skin. The flat-round fruit ripens dark red to mahogany-brown; olive-green and brown stripes remain visible even at full ripeness. The right harvest time also shows in the fruit yielding slightly to gentle pressure.
Fruit, flavour and use
The fruit, usually weighing 200 to 400 grams, has juicy, meaty flesh. Flavour-wise, sweetness, spice, mild acidity and a lightly earthy note stay in balance. Thick slices suit salad, caprese, burgers and sandwiches. For a clean cut surface, slice the fully ripe fruit only just before serving.
Growing in a bed or pot
As a tall cordon tomato, the variety needs a load-bearing support and is trained to one or two main shoots for manageable growing. Support heavy fruit clusters additionally. A sunny, warm and rain-sheltered spot supports ripening. Even watering is especially important for the large fruit; for pot growing, plan for at least 25 litres of substrate.
A tomato young plant, raised by us
We raise the Cherokee Chocolate Stripes tomato plant ourselves at our family business in Illmitz. After shipping, the young plant should first stand in a bright, sheltered spot and be gradually acclimatised to direct sun and wind. It only goes outdoors permanently once no more late frosts are expected.
