Cherokee Purple – special features of the variety
Cherokee Purple is one of the well-known historic beefsteak tomatoes. The variety was popularised in the early 1990s by tomato expert Craig LeHoullier. Its large, often slightly irregular fruit shows a dark pink-violet to mahogany tone; green shoulders can remain at full ripeness.
Fruit, flavour and use
The tomatoes, usually weighing 250 to 450 grams, have a juicy, rather soft texture. Their aroma is rich, sweet-spicy and accompanied by pleasant acidity. Cherokee Purple really shines fresh: as a bold tomato slice, in salad and caprese, or on burgers and sandwiches.
Growing in a bed or pot
The indeterminate plant keeps growing through the season and needs a sturdy support. We recommend growing it in a warm, sunny and rain-sheltered spot with one or two main shoots. Secure large fruit or trusses additionally. In a container, use at least 25 litres, more is better, and watch for even soil moisture.
A tomato young plant, raised by us
We raise the Cherokee Purple tomato plant ourselves at our family business in Illmitz. After shipping, the young plant should first stand in a bright, sheltered spot and be gradually acclimatised to direct sun and wind. It only goes outdoors permanently once no more late frosts are expected.
