Red Zebra – special features of the variety
Red Zebra is a strikingly striped cordon tomato, also sold under that English name. Its medium-sized fruit ripens red to red-orange and keeps yellow stripes. The plant reaches around 1.8 metres and, compared to strongly branching varieties, produces relatively few side shoots.
Fruit, flavour and use
The round to lightly flattened fruit usually weighs around 80 to 120 grams. Its flavour is fruity, spicy and pleasantly tart, with less sweetness than typical snacking tomatoes. Red Zebra suits salads, a light lunch, sandwiches and the grill. With green or yellow varieties, it creates a clear colour contrast.
Growing in a bed or pot
A warm, full-sun and rain-sheltered spot is especially recommended in wetter regions. The plant is trained to one or two shoots on a sturdy support and tied in regularly. In a container, use at least 20 litres of soil and water evenly.
A tomato young plant, raised by us
We raise the Red Zebra tomato plant ourselves at our family business in Illmitz. After shipping, the young plant should first stand in a bright, sheltered spot and be gradually acclimatised to direct sun and wind. It only goes outdoors permanently once no more late frosts are expected.
