Black Zebra is a dark red-and-green striped salad tomato with a bold flavour. The medium-sized fruit slices cleanly and is versatile in use. We raise our open-pollinated young plants ourselves in Illmitz.
What do Black Zebra tomatoes look like?
The fruit is round to lightly flattened. As it ripens, the base colour turns dark red to mahogany-brown while greenish or olive stripes stay visible. This pattern clearly sets Black Zebra apart from single-colour dark tomatoes.
Flavour and use
Fully ripe Black Zebra tomatoes taste bold, sweet-spicy and pleasantly tart. The firm, juicy flesh suits salads, sandwiches and burgers. Salsa, grilled dishes, roasted tomatoes and aromatic sauces are also good uses.
Growth and ripening time
Black Zebra grows indeterminate and usually reaches 180–220 cm. The variety ripens medium to medium-late. It fruits over a longer period, as long as warmth, light and nutrient supply are sufficient.
Growing Black Zebra
A sturdy tomato stake or string is necessary. With one- or two-shoot growing, side shoots are removed regularly. A sunny, warm and, where possible, rain-sheltered spot supports aroma, colour and leaf health.
Growing in a pot
For a container, we recommend at least 20–25 litres of volume. Even water supply is important, without creating waterlogging. During flowering and fruit development, feed regularly with a suitable tomato or vegetable fertiliser.
