Purple Sunrise – special features of the variety
Purple Sunrise is also known under the name Purpura Rits. The flat-round, sometimes lightly ribbed fruit ripens golden yellow and develops dark violet anthocyanin patches on heavily sun-exposed areas. The more sun that reaches the skin, the bolder this contrast can become.
Fruit, flavour and use
The large beefsteak tomatoes usually weigh around 150 to 300 grams. Beneath the multicoloured skin lies pale, juicy and meaty flesh with a mildly sweet, fruity aroma. Purple Sunrise suits salads, caprese, a light lunch and sandwiches fresh; thick slices show off the unusual colour especially well.
Growing in a bed or pot
As an indeterminate cordon tomato, the variety reaches around 180 to 200 centimetres and needs a sturdy support. One or two main shoots make care easier; support heavy fruit clusters additionally if needed. Plant in a full-sun, warm and, where possible, rain-sheltered spot. In a pot, use at least 25 litres of soil.
A tomato young plant, raised by us
We raise the Purple Sunrise tomato plant ourselves at our family business in Illmitz. After shipping, the young plant should first stand in a bright, sheltered spot and be gradually acclimatised to direct sun and wind. It only goes outdoors permanently once no more late frosts are expected.
