Russian Travel Tomato – special features of the variety
The Russian Travel Tomato is also known as Travel Tomato, Voyage or Travel. Its deep red fruit consists of several clearly defined segments that can usually be broken off individually. According to common variety descriptions, the variety comes from Guatemala; the "Russian" in its name is not a confirmed indication of Russian origin.
Fruit, flavour and use
A single fruit usually weighs around 100 to 130 grams, individual segments around 20 to 40 grams. The firm flesh releases only a little juice at the small break point. Flavour-wise, the Travel Tomato is spicy-aromatic and clearly tart. It's easy to share and suits a light lunch, picnics, hikes and salad.
Growing in a bed or pot
Grown as a cordon tomato, the variety reaches around 200 to 250 centimetres and is pruned regularly. Alternatively, it can be trained with multiple shoots on a sturdy trellis. A full-sun, warm and, where possible, rain-sheltered spot is favourable. In a pot, plan for at least 25 litres of soil.
A tomato young plant, raised by us
We raise the Russian Travel Tomato plant ourselves at our family business in Illmitz. After shipping, the young plant should first stand in a bright, sheltered spot and be gradually acclimatised to direct sun and wind. It only goes outdoors permanently once no more late frosts are expected.
