Black Ethiopian is a darkly coloured plum and salad tomato with a bold, sweet-tart aroma. Despite its name, the variety is attributed to Ukraine. We raise our open-pollinated young plants ourselves in Illmitz.
Colour and shape of Black Ethiopian
The fruit is oval to plum-shaped and ripens from green to dark red, mahogany or bronze. Greenish shoulders can remain at the stem end. For ripeness, it's therefore important to look not just at colour but also for the fruit yielding slightly to gentle pressure.
How does Black Ethiopian taste?
Fully ripe fruit tastes bold, fruity and well-balanced between sweet and tart. Spicy notes give the variety more depth than very mild salad tomatoes. Sun and full ripeness are especially important for aroma development.
Use in the kitchen
Black Ethiopian suits tomato salad, bread and a light lunch fresh. The medium-sized, aromatic fruit can also be roasted or braised and processed into a dark tomato sauce or sugo.
Growth and training
The variety grows indeterminate and usually reaches around 150–200 cm. A sturdy support is necessary. With one- or two-shoot growing, side shoots are removed regularly and the main shoots tied in continuously.
Black Ethiopian in a pot and outdoors
In a container, we recommend at least 20–25 litres of volume. A sunny, warm spot, even watering and regular feeding secure supply. Outdoors, a roof protects against extended periods of wet foliage.
