Atomic Fusion is a multicoloured striped tomato from Brad Gates' breeding. The variety came about as a larger-fruited selection from the Brad's Atomic Grape line. We raise our open-pollinated young plants ourselves in Illmitz.
What do Atomic Fusion tomatoes look like?
The fruit is elongated to round-plum-shaped and shows green, red, orange, brown and dark anthocyanin tones depending on ripening stage. Sun exposure and ripeness influence the pattern, so it varies from fruit to fruit.
Flavour and use
Fully ripe Atomic Fusion tomatoes taste sweet-fruity and well-balanced. At around 50–100 g, they sit between a large cocktail and small salad tomato. Fresh, they suit salads, sandwiches and cold platters, but can also be grilled or oven-roasted.
Growth habit and ripening time
Atomic Fusion grows indeterminate and fruits over a longer period. The variety ripens roughly mid-season. A sturdy support is necessary, since the plant keeps growing taller through summer and forms new trusses.
Growing Atomic Fusion correctly
Choose a sunny, warm and, where possible, sheltered spot. With one- or two-shoot training, side shoots are pruned regularly. An airy structure and watering close to the soil help keep the foliage dry.
Atomic Fusion in a pot
For pot growing, we recommend at least 20 litres, ideally around 25 litres of volume. A large pot stabilises water and nutrient supply. The plant is tied in continuously to a tomato stake or string.
