Brad's Atomic Grape – character and use
Brad's Atomic Grape stands out for its ever-changing fruit colour. Unripe fruit shows lots of violet and green; as it ripens further, red, brown and olive tones join in. The open-pollinated variety comes from Brad Gates and Wild Boar Farms. It's a good choice for anyone who picks unusual tomato varieties not just for colour, but for aroma too.
Fruit, flavour and harvest
The elongated fruit usually weighs 15 to 30 grams. Fully ripe, it tastes sweet, fruity and complex, accompanied by pleasant acidity. Since colour alone doesn't always clearly reveal ripeness, the fruit should also yield slightly. It suits eating fresh, salads and colourful tomato platters.
Position and care
The plant grows indeterminate and needs a tall, sturdy support. One or two main shoots are worthwhile for manageable growing. A sunny spot encourages the anthocyanin colouring; warmth and rain protection support even ripening. In a pot, plan for at least 20 litres of soil and water evenly. Keep the delicate foliage airy, but don't remove it more than necessary.
A tomato young plant, raised by us
We raise the Brad's Atomic Grape tomato plant ourselves at our family business in Illmitz. You'll get a vigorous young plant to start your tomato season. After shipping, it should first stand in a bright, sheltered spot and be gradually acclimatised to direct sun and outdoor conditions. It's only planted out permanently once no more late frosts are expected.
