Puszta Kolosz – special features of the variety
Despite its Hungarian-sounding name, Puszta Kolosz comes from Transylvania in Romania, specifically the region around Cluj. The indeterminate plant grows vigorously and produces very large red beefsteak tomatoes. Given the high fruit weight, both the support and fruit supports should be load-bearing from the start.
Fruit, flavour and use
The flat-round to lightly ribbed fruit often reaches around 500 to 1,000 grams. The flesh stays juicy and doesn't turn mealy at good ripeness. Flavour-wise, Puszta Kolosz shows sweet-fruity, classically tomato notes. Thick slices suit salad, caprese, burgers and sandwiches; larger harvests can also be processed into sauce.
Growing in a bed or pot
The variety prefers a full-sun, warm and, where possible, rain-sheltered spot. We recommend one or two main shoots, regular tying in and targeted support for heavy fruit. Even watering reduces growth stress. In a container, plan for at least 30 litres of substrate; a larger vessel makes care easier.
A tomato young plant, raised by us
We raise the Puszta Kolosz tomato plant ourselves at our family business in Illmitz. After shipping, the young plant should first stand in a bright, sheltered spot and be gradually acclimatised to direct sun and wind. It only goes outdoors permanently once no more late frosts are expected.
