Capsicum annuum

Capsicum annuum is one of the most widely grown chilli species and includes a particularly large number of well-known varieties. In our own range of young plants grown in Illmitz, the selection runs from mild relatives of sweet peppers to hot classics.

Capsicum annuum varieties in our range

Well-known varieties of this species include the jalapeño, the smoky, mild Ancho Poblano, the Mexican Guajillo and the compact Serrano. We also grow special types such as the cherry-red Cherry Bomb chilli and the Spanish Pimiento de Padron. Heat within the species ranges from mild to distinctly fiery.

Because Capsicum annuum covers a very wide range of heat, its varieties are spread across several of our heat categories: mild ones in sweet pepper & mild chilli plants (heat level 0-3), pleasantly fiery varieties in medium-hot chilli plants (heat level 4-7) and intensely hot varieties in hot chilli plants (heat level 8-10).

How it differs from other chilli species

Unlike the fruity, hot Capsicum chinense with habanero and its relatives, or Capsicum pubescens with the rocoto varieties, Capsicum annuum stands out for its especially versatile shapes, colours and uses in the kitchen. Ordering Capsicum annuum plants

Pre-orders open in early January. Plants ship in spring, once the young plants are strong enough for transport. This category stays online outside the season, so you can browse in advance and choose your favourites.
