The Jalapeno plant is one of the best-known chillies of all – and one of the most practical varieties if you want to use your own harvest in lots of different ways. We raise our jalapeños ourselves in Illmitz. With its clearly noticeable heat, thick-fleshed fruit and the option to harvest it green or red, it suits pot, greenhouse and garden equally well. If you'd like to discover more varieties, you'll find all our chilli plants, raised by us. Botanically, jalapeno belongs to Capsicum annuum.
How hot is a jalapeno?
Traditional jalapeños sit at around 2,500–8,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU). With this heat, jalapeno can be found in the chilli plants with heat level 0–3 category. That gives jalapeno a clearly noticeable heat, while staying versatile enough for salsa, burgers, nachos, grilled dishes and pickled chillies.
Green or red jalapeno – when to harvest?
Jalapeños are very often harvested green. If you leave the fruit longer on the plant, it fully ripens red. That's not a different variety, just a later ripening stage of the same fruit.
Green, jalapeños are fresh and hearty. Fully ripe red, they develop a riper aroma and are the classic starting point for chipotle.
Growing jalapeno: pot, balcony and care
For a jalapeno plant, we recommend a sunny, warm and sheltered spot. It suits a pot, balcony, patio and greenhouse very well. In a pot, at least 8 litres makes sense, ideally 10 litres; with 15–20 litres, the plant gets an especially generous root run. The plant grows bushy and needs above all warmth, light and as long a season as possible.
Even watering, good drainage and enough nutrients matter. Since chillies are frost-sensitive, the plant should only go outside permanently once the nights stay reliably warm. If you'd like to overwinter it, move it to a frost-free spot before the first frost.
From red jalapeno to chipotle
One especially exciting point about jalapeno is how it's processed: chipotle is a smoked and dried red jalapeno. If you let your fruit fully ripen red, you can smoke and dry it yourself. You can read more about chipotle in our chipotle guide.
If you'd rather use the typical jalapeno aroma already ground, you'll also find our jalapeno chilli powder from our own harvest.
