The Thai Red chilli plant is a classic choice for anyone who wants to grow Thai chilli themselves. The compact plant carries slender fruit that can be used green or fully ripe red. Botanically, Thai Red belongs to Capsicum annuum.
How hot is Thai Red?
For our Thai Red, we set around 15,000–30,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU). That gives it a clear, well-noticeable heat, while staying well below extreme superhot chillies. That makes it especially versatile for everyday Asian cooking.
Using Thai chilli fresh or dried
Thai Red suits curries, wok dishes, soups and dips fresh. Fully ripe red fruit, thanks to its slender shape, also dries very well. Thai Red from our growing is also part of our Blend chilli powder.
Thai Red in a pot and on the balcony
Thanks to its compact to bushy growth, Thai Red is excellent for a pot, balcony and patio. We recommend at least 8 litres, ideally 10 litres of soil volume; with 15–20 litres, the plant gets an especially generous root run. Plenty of sun, warmth and good drainage are important.
Another exciting Thai chilli
If you'd like to try a noticeably longer fruit shape, take a look at Thai Thunder Mountain Long Horn too. It sets a very different focus within our Asian-inspired chilli selection.
