Capsicum pubescens

Capsicum pubescens is a South American highland chilli species, known for vigorous growth, fleshy fruit and greater cold tolerance than other chilli species. We raise our rocoto plants ourselves as young plants in Illmitz, Burgenland, Austria.

Rocoto varieties in our range

Our Capsicum pubescens range includes the Rocoto Oculto and the strong red Rocoto Large Red. Both varieties stand for the typical, slightly earthy flavour and the characteristic heat of this species. Rocoto is also commonly called tree chilli. The name comes from the trunk becoming woody when the plant is grown over several years, for which these varieties are ideally suited.

What makes Capsicum pubescens special

Unlike many other chilli species, Capsicum pubescens comes from higher, cooler regions of the Andes, which shows in its sturdier growth. The species is also recognisable by its purple flowers and dark seeds – a clear difference from Capsicum annuum or Capsicum chinense.

Ordering Capsicum pubescens plants
