Plum & Roma tomatoes grown by us
We raise our Roma and plum tomatoes ourselves as young plants in Illmitz, Burgenland, Austria. Typical of many varieties are elongated or oval fruit with a high proportion of flesh. This makes many Roma and plum tomatoes especially good for sauces, preserving and Mediterranean cooking.
If you want to buy Roma or plum tomato plants, you will find both well-known classics and unusual varieties with different colours, shapes and flavours.
Roma tomatoes, plum tomatoes and sauce tomatoes
The terms Roma, plum (also called bottle) and sauce tomato often overlap. Roma tomatoes usually have elongated to oval fruit and are popular for processing because of their texture. Plum tomatoes also describe an elongated fruit type, while with sauce tomatoes the focus is mainly on later use in the kitchen.
Not every variety is therefore built in exactly the same way. What matters are fruit shape, texture, flavour and whether you want to eat the tomatoes fresh or mostly process them in the kitchen.
From San Marzano to unusual plum tomatoes
One of the best-known varieties in this group is San Marzano, a classic for tomato sauces and Italian cooking. We also grow varieties such as Rio Largo, Roma striee, Mom's Paste and Banana Legs.
With Artisan Blush Tiger, Atomic Fusion and Antho Pink Panther you will also find more unusual varieties that stand out for special colours and fruit shapes and show the variety within this tomato group.
Roma & plum tomatoes for sauce and preserving
Many Roma and plum tomatoes are excellent for homemade tomato sauce, passata, soups, chutneys and preserving. Varieties with plenty of flesh and comparatively little juice can be processed especially efficiently.
Other varieties also taste very good fresh and can be used both for salads and snack platters and for processing. On the individual product pages you will therefore find more detail on flavour, fruit, growth and recommended use.
Roma & plum tomatoes for garden and greenhouse
Growth habits differ considerably by variety. Some grow vigorously as cordon (tall) tomatoes, others develop more compactly or bushier. Fruit size and ripening time can also vary greatly.
A sunny, warm and, if possible, sheltered spot gives good conditions for many tomato varieties. Which plant suits your garden, greenhouse or available space best, you can compare using the details on the individual variety pages.
Ordering Roma & plum tomatoes as plants
Pre-orders for our tomato plants open in early January. Plants ship in spring, once the young plants are strong enough and temperatures allow safe transport.
Our variety pages stay online outside the selling season. This way you can compare different Roma and plum tomatoes and choose your favourites before pre-orders open.
