Roma – special features of the variety
Roma belongs to the well-known peeled-tomato and paste-tomato types. The plant grows determinate, making it bushier and more limited than a classic cordon tomato. Its red fruit is broadly elongated to egg-shaped with firm flesh and comparatively few seeds.
Fruit, flavour and use
The tomatoes, usually weighing 80 to 100 grams, taste mildly aromatic and well-balanced. Their low juice content shortens cooking time for sauce, passata and tomato paste. Roma is also great for preserving, bruschetta, grilling and oven dishes, and diced for dishes that shouldn't get too watery.
Growing in a bed or pot
The bush tomato is grown with multiple shoots and isn't pruned regularly like a cordon tomato. Under heavy fruit load, several stakes or a tomato cage help. Plant in a sunny, warm and sheltered spot, water evenly and avoid waterlogging. In a pot, plan for at least 15 to 20 litres of substrate.
A tomato young plant, raised by us
We raise the Roma tomato plant ourselves at our family business in Illmitz. After shipping, the young plant should first stand in a bright, sheltered spot and be gradually acclimatised to direct sun and wind. It only goes outdoors permanently once no more late frosts are expected.
