Rio Largo – special features of the variety
Rio Largo is a breed from ReinSaat for market and home gardening. The variety grows indeterminate and produces oval, red fruit with thick flesh. It ripens around the middle of the tomato season and suits a cold tunnel as well as sheltered outdoor spots.
Fruit, flavour and use
The fruit weighs around 100 to 150 grams and has a firm, meaty structure. Its flavour is well-balanced, aromatic and classically tomato-like. Rio Largo can be used fresh in salads, bruschetta and a light lunch. At the same time, it suits sauce, soup, drying and preserving.
Growing in a bed or pot
As a tall cordon tomato, Rio Largo is trained on a sturdy support and tied in regularly. One or two main shoots keep growing manageable. Plant in a full-sun, warm and, where possible, sheltered spot. In a pot, use at least 25 litres of soil and avoid strong swings in soil moisture.
A tomato young plant, raised by us
We raise the Rio Largo tomato plant ourselves at our family business in Illmitz. After shipping, the young plant should first stand in a bright, sheltered spot and be gradually acclimatised to direct sun and wind. It only goes outdoors permanently once no more late frosts are expected.
