The Devil's Tongue Yellow chilli plant combines high heat with a strikingly bright, fruity aroma. We raise the variety ourselves in Illmitz. Botanically, it belongs to Capsicum chinense and sits flavour-wise close to aromatic habanero types.
How hot is Devil's Tongue Yellow?
Typical figures are around 125,000–325,000 Scoville Heat Units. That makes Devil's Tongue Yellow considerably hotter than many classic kitchen chillies, while staying aromatic enough to work as more than just heat. With this Scoville range, it's a clear heat level 8–10 variety and can be found among our chilli plants with heat level 8–10.
Long, wrinkled fruit in bright yellow
The elongated, heavily wrinkled fruit ripens from green to bright yellow and typically grows to around 6–8 cm long. Its shape recalls a slim, wrinkly habanero. The plant grows bushy and well branched and can reach around 90–120 cm under good conditions.
Fruity and citrusy in the kitchen
In flavour, Devil's Tongue Yellow is fruity, lightly citrusy and typically aromatic for Capsicum chinense. It's especially well suited to fruity chilli sauces, hot marinades, ferments and chutneys, as well as drying and grinding. If you'd like to turn your own harvest into a sauce, you'll find the basics in our guide to making chilli sauce.
From our growing: Sonniger Süden and Gelbes Gold
We process Devil's Tongue Yellow into our Sonniger Süden hot sauce, together with pineapple. In our Gelbes Gold chilli paste, the variety shows an even more concentrated side. Both products are made with chillies from our own growing in Illmitz.
Growing Devil's Tongue Yellow in a pot
For a vigorous plant, we recommend at least 8 litres, ideally 10 litres of pot volume; 15–20 litres is ideal if you have the space. Warmth, sun and a sheltered spot especially help with its late ripening. Under warm conditions, the variety needs around 90–100 days to ripen; it makes particularly good use of a greenhouse or a warm house wall. The plant isn't frost-hardy, but it can be overwintered in a bright, frost-free spot.
