Dattelwein – character and use
Dattelwein is an open-pollinated old German variety known for its strongly branching multiflora trusses. A single truss can carry a great many yellow fruit. Its small pear-to-date shape and abundant fruit set make it an interesting variety for snacking gardens and colourful tomato mixes.
Fruit, flavour and harvest
The fruit usually weighs 10 to 30 grams and has a thin yet comparatively firm skin. Flavour-wise, it's sweet and fruity with a lightly spicy note. It suits snacking, salads, light lunch platters and as a yellow garnish. Fully yellow-ripe fruit shows the best aroma.
Position and care
Dattelwein grows as a vigorous cordon tomato to around two metres or taller. Alongside a sturdy support, the large, heavy trusses should also be secured. A warm, sunny and, where possible, rain-sheltered spot is ideal. In a container, plan for at least 20 litres of substrate, water evenly, and train the plant to one or two main shoots.
A tomato young plant, raised by us
We raise the Dattelwein tomato plant ourselves at our family business in Illmitz. You'll get a vigorous young plant to start your tomato season. After shipping, it should first stand in a bright, sheltered spot and be gradually acclimatised to direct sun and outdoor conditions. It's only planted out permanently once no more late frosts are expected.
