Yellow Currant – special features of the variety
Yellow Currant is a bushy wild tomato from ReinSaat's variety-preservation breeding. It develops many fine side shoots and long trusses with small yellow fruit. Unlike a slender, trained cordon tomato, it's allowed to branch out, so enough space should be planned for from the start.
Fruit, flavour and use
The round fruit weighs roughly five to eight grams. Despite their small size, they have a sweet, bold wild-tomato flavour. They're great straight off the plant for snacking, for salads, finger food and as a yellow garnish. Pick ripe fruit regularly, since the numerous trusses can otherwise quickly get overwhelming.
Growing in a bed or pot
The variety suits outdoor beds, raised beds and a sufficiently large pot. It's pruned not at all or only very lightly. A trellis, fence or several stakes help guide the long side shoots with good airflow. In a container, plan for at least 15 to 20 litres of soil and water evenly on hot days.
A tomato young plant, raised by us
We raise the Yellow Currant tomato plant ourselves at our family business in Illmitz. After shipping, the young plant should first stand in a bright, sheltered spot and be gradually acclimatised to direct sun and wind. It only goes outdoors permanently once no more late frosts are expected.
