The Zebrange chilli is a still relatively young Capsicum baccatum from Belgium. It was developed from Aji Fantasy and Christmas Bell. Its most striking feature shows during ripening: on an orange base colour, the fruit develops increasingly clear red stripes.
How hot is Zebrange chilli?
Zebrange Scoville values range from a few thousand up to over 10,000 SHU. With this heat, Zebrange is a heat level 4 variety and can be found in the category chilli plants with heat level 4–7. Within the fruit, the heat sits mainly around the placenta and seeds.
For us, this variety isn't about maximum heat anyway, but about the combination of sweet flesh, fruity aroma and an extraordinary look.
A cross between Aji Fantasy and Christmas Bell
Zebrange was developed from two different baccatum types. Behind the breeding are Laurent Minet and the Centre Technique Horticole Gembloux. Its unusual fruit shape recalls Christmas Bell, or Bishop's Crown, while its fruity aroma fits well with the Aji family. What sets Capsicum baccatum apart from the other cultivated species is shown in our guide chilli species compared.
If you like unusual baccatum varieties, take a look at our Sugar Rush Stripey too. It also develops striking stripes, but differs clearly from Zebrange in fruit shape and flavour.
Sweet, juicy and versatile in the kitchen
The flesh is sweet, juicy and distinctly fruity, with a lightly tropical note. Zebrange is excellent for eating fresh, for salads, stuffing and grilling, for chutneys or for milder fruity chilli sauces. If you remove the hotter inner parts, you get an especially generous amount of sweet fruit aroma.
A chilli that made an impression on us too
With many rarities, looks come first. Zebrange is one of the pleasant exceptions for us: we find the fruit not just extraordinarily beautiful, but just as convincing in flavour.
That's exactly why it fits so well into our chilli rarities. Botanically, you'll also find it among our Capsicum baccatum – a variety for collectors who genuinely want to use their harvest too.
Growing Zebrange
As a Capsicum baccatum, Zebrange grows more vigorously and partly more spreading than many compact Capsicum annuum. The bushy, well-branched plant reaches around 70–120 cm and forms numerous bell- to umbrella-shaped fruit, usually 5–6 cm in size. We recommend a sunny, warm and, where possible, sheltered spot. In a pot, at least 8 litres makes sense, 10 litres is better; with 15–20 litres, the plant has ideal space. Zebrange ripens medium to medium-late and can be overwintered frost-free.
