Fiammante – special features of the variety
Fiammante is an open-pollinated breed from ReinSaat, developed with Gerhard Hof. Botanically and culinarily, it belongs to the oxheart type: the fruit is elongated, almost pointed at the lower end, and ripens pink. That clearly sets it apart from red, cylindrical Roma or San Marzano tomatoes.
Fruit, flavour and use
The fruit weighs around 120 to 150 grams and has compact, meaty flesh. Its flavour is described as fresh and aromatic. Fiammante suits slicing for salad, a light lunch, sandwiches and caprese. Gentle processing is also possible, though its strength lies just as clearly in eating fresh.
Growing in a bed or pot
The plant grows indeterminate and needs a sturdy support. A sunny, warm spot in a greenhouse, under a tomato roof, or against a sheltered house wall is favourable. Train to one or two shoots and tie in regularly. In a pot, use at least 20 to 25 litres of soil and provide water and nutrients evenly.
A tomato young plant, raised by us
We raise the Fiammante tomato plant ourselves at our family business in Illmitz. After shipping, the young plant should first stand in a bright, sheltered spot and be gradually acclimatised to direct sun and wind. It only goes outdoors permanently once no more late frosts are expected.
