Banana Legs is a yellow bush tomato with elongated, banana-like fruit. Its compact growth and meaty fruit structure make it interesting for balcony, patio and kitchen alike. We raise our open-pollinated young plants ourselves in Illmitz.
Why is the tomato called Banana Legs?
The fruit grows to around 8–10 cm, ripens bright yellow and often has a small point. Combined with its elongated shape, this recalls small bananas. Its firm interior contains comparatively little juice and few seeds.
How does Banana Legs taste?
Fully ripe, Banana Legs tastes mild and sweet-fruity with little acidity. Fresh, it suits salad, a light lunch and salsa. Its meaty interior is also practical for yellow tomato sauce, purée, oven dishes and drying.
A compact bush tomato instead of a tall cordon tomato
Banana Legs grows determinate and usually stays around 80–120 cm tall. That means it needs less height than classic cordon tomatoes. The plant suits a raised bed, garden bed or a sufficiently large container well.
Does Banana Legs need pruning?
No. The side shoots carry a significant part of the flowers and fruit. Strict pruning would reduce potential yield. Just remove damaged or overly crowded shoots and support the plant all around.
Care in a pot
We recommend at least 15–20 litres of pot volume, a full-sun spot and even watering. A tomato cage or several short stakes prevent fruit-laden shoots from bending over. Feed regularly with a suitable tomato fertiliser during fruiting.
