NuMex Suave is the answer to an unusual question: how do you get the typical fruity aroma of a habanero without the enormous heat? Developed at New Mexico State University, the Suave line belongs to Capsicum chinense and was deliberately bred for very low heat. That makes it a great fit for our habanero plant selection.
How hot is NuMex Suave?
While classic habaneros are often in the six-figure Scoville range, the known NuMex Suave types reach only a few hundred SHU. NMSU documents values well under 1,000 SHU for the Suave line. We accordingly rate our product at heat level 0.
Habanero aroma without extreme heat
The low heat changes how you can use it considerably. NuMex Suave can be used more generously, bringing fruity, tropical chinense aromas to salads, dressings, marinades, relishes, chutneys or roasted vegetables. If you find habanero flavour exciting but can't do much with 100,000 SHU or more, this gives you a very unusual alternative.
NuMex Suave Orange or Red?
New Mexico State University has released several Suave types, including Orange and Red. We deliberately list our product as NuMex Suave. Since the colour designation isn't always consistently carried through seed lines, we focus on this page on the shared, reliably documented traits: Capsicum chinense, habanero type and extremely low heat.
Growing NuMex Suave in a pot
Despite its mild fruit, the plant has the same warmth requirements as other Capsicum chinense. A sunny, sheltered spot is ideal. In a pot, we recommend at least 8 litres, ideally 10 litres; 15–20 litres is ideal. Another interesting NuMex breed in our range is NuMex Big Jim.
