The Chocolate Reaper chilli plant is a dark Reaper variant for lovers of extreme chillies. Its brown, heavily wrinkled fruit clearly recalls the red Carolina Reaper, but sets its own accent visually and in flavour.
How hot is Chocolate Reaper?
Chocolate Reaper is often cited at around 1.4–2.2 million SHU. Unlike the red Carolina Reaper, there's no comparably well-documented Guinness average for this colour variant. What matters in practice: it clearly belongs to the extreme superhot class. With these values, Chocolate Reaper is a clear heat level 10+++ variety.
Chocolate Reaper or Carolina Reaper?
If you're after the officially documented former world record holder, you'll find it in the red Carolina Reaper. Chocolate Reaper, by contrast, is especially interesting if you want a dark colour variant with Reaper character. You'll find the background on Pepper X and the hottest chilli in the world in our guide. If you'd like the dark brown colour with much less heat, you'll find it in the Habanero Chocolate.
Dark brown fruit with a stinger
The fruit is heavily wrinkled and irregularly shaped, often has a stinger-like tip and ripens from green to a deep brown. It usually grows to around 3–5 cm. The plant grows vigorous, bushy and well branched and reaches around 80–120 cm under good conditions.
Flavour and use
Before the massive heat, fruity, lightly earthy-dark notes come through. In the kitchen, the tiniest amounts are enough for very hot sauces, ferments or chilli oil; the fruit can also be dried and made into an extremely hot powder. You'll find a basic recipe for your own chilli oil in our guide to making chilli oil.
Growing Chocolate Reaper
Plenty of warmth, a long season and a sufficiently large pot are essential. We recommend a full-sun, very warm and sheltered spot; in a greenhouse or polytunnel, its long ripening time of around 90–110 days can be used most reliably in our climate. For pot growing, use at least 8, ideally 10 litres, with 15–20 litres being ideal. Overwintered frost-free, the plant can also be grown for several years. You'll find more extreme varieties among our chilli plants with heat level 10+++.
