Brandywine Black – character and use
Brandywine Black belongs to the dark beefsteak tomatoes and shows the potato-leaf foliage typical of Brandywine types. The large fruit ripens mahogany-red to dark violet and has juicy, rather soft flesh. Its value lies above all in classic tomato aroma; the variety isn't meant for long storage.
Fruit, flavour and harvest
Depending on position and fruit set, the flat-round, lightly ribbed tomatoes often reach 200 to 450 grams. The flavour is full-bodied, fruity and spicy with balanced sweetness and acidity. Thick slices suit bread and sandwiches, smaller pieces salads and caprese; very ripe fruit can also be processed into sauce.
Position and care
For this medium-late variety, a warm, full-sun and rain-sheltered spot is advantageous. The cordon tomato is tied in regularly and best trained to one or two main shoots. Support large fruit or trusses additionally. Even watering reduces growth stress. In a pot, use at least 25 litres, more is better.
A tomato young plant, raised by us
We raise the Brandywine Black tomato plant ourselves at our family business in Illmitz. You'll get a vigorous young plant to start your tomato season. After shipping, it should first stand in a bright, sheltered spot and be gradually acclimatised to direct sun and outdoor conditions. It's only planted out permanently once no more late frosts are expected.
