Berner Rose is a traditional Swiss beefsteak tomato with pink fruit and a fine, thin skin. Its harmonious flavour makes it a popular variety for eating fresh. We raise our open-pollinated young plants ourselves in Illmitz.
Berner Rose or Rose de Berne
Both names refer to the same variety. Typical are pink to raspberry-red, round to lightly flattened fruit. Depending on location and growing conditions, weight usually sits between around 120 and 250 grams.
How does Berner Rose taste?
Fully ripe fruit tastes sweet, aromatic and pleasantly balanced. The acidity stays present without dominating the flavour. The soft, juicy flesh and thin skin make Berner Rose ideal for salad, caprese, bread and sandwiches.
Growth and ripening
Berner Rose grows indeterminate and usually reaches 180–220 cm. As a cordon tomato, it produces new flowers and fruit over a longer period. The variety ripens medium to medium-late and benefits, in cooler regions, from a warm, sheltered spot.
Why rain protection makes sense
The fine skin is one of the variety's flavour strengths, but it's more sensitive to strong swings in moisture. Even watering and protection from heavy rain can help reduce splitting in nearly ripe fruit.
Growing and pruning Berner Rose
We recommend one- or two-shoot growing on a sturdy stake or string. Side shoots are removed regularly. Leave enough distance for good airflow, and keep the leaves dry when watering.
Berner Rose in a pot
A container should hold at least around 25 litres. A larger volume makes it easier to keep water and nutrient supply even. With a sunny spot, a support and regular feeding, the variety can also be grown on a patio or balcony.
