Capsicum frutescens is a compact-growing chilli species, known worldwide above all for varieties such as Tabasco, Thai chilli, bird's eye chilli and piri piri. From this species we currently offer one variety, raised as a young plant in Illmitz, Burgenland, Austria.

With the Costa Rica Orange we offer an aromatic, strongly hot variety of this species. It impresses with intense flavour and the upright growth habit that is typical of Capsicum frutescens.

What makes Capsicum frutescens special

Plants of this species usually grow more compactly than other chilli species and carry their fruit upright rather than hanging. Heat ranges from medium to very hot depending on the variety – you will find our Costa Rica Orange in our medium-hot chilli plants (heat level 4-7).

How it differs from other chilli species

Unlike the versatile Capsicum annuum or the fruity, hot Capsicum chinense, Capsicum frutescens is known for its compact growth and spicy heat. We are continually expanding our range of this species – do check back.
