Thai Pink Egg – special features of the variety
Thai Pink Egg is a historic, open-pollinated tomato variety from Thailand. The small fruit is plum- to egg-shaped and changes during ripening from pale green through cream to light pink. Firm skin and thick fruit walls are among its characteristic traits.
Fruit, flavour and use
The fruit, roughly three to five centimetres long, usually weighs around 20 to 30 grams. Its aroma is mild, lightly sweet and subtly tomato-like. Thai Pink Egg suits salads and salsa, vegetable platters, or as a pink garnish. Its meaty structure also allows gentle drying and processing.
Growing in a bed or pot
The variety is grown as a cordon tomato on a support. Final height varies by line and growing conditions; in the garden, we plan for around 150 to 200 centimetres. Plant in a sunny, warm and, where possible, sheltered spot. In a pot, use at least 15 to 20 litres of soil and tie in regularly.
A tomato young plant, raised by us
We raise the Thai Pink Egg tomato plant ourselves at our family business in Illmitz. After shipping, the young plant should first stand in a bright, sheltered spot and be gradually acclimatised to direct sun and wind. It only goes outdoors permanently once no more late frosts are expected.
